Synopsis

Develop your understanding of Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers and build the analytical skills needed for GCSE English Literature. This 6-week live online masterclass explores the play’s key themes, context and characters before focusing on the exam skills needed to produce confident, well-developed responses. Students will practise selecting and embedding quotations, analysing Russell’s use of language, form and structure, making relevant contextual links, and developing PEEL and PETAL paragraphs.
Course fee: £15 per session × 6 weeks = £90 in total.

Course Details

Week 1
Explore Britain in the late twentieth century, Liverpool and Skelmersdale, and how Russell presents money, social class and unequal opportunities.
Week 2
Explore fate and superstition, childhood and growing up, friendship, identity and gender, connecting these themes to Russell’s wider message.
Week 3
Analyse Mrs Johnstone and Mr and Mrs Lyons, focusing on parenthood, family, class, contrasting lifestyles and the circumstances that shape the twins’ lives.
Week 4
Analyse Mickey, Edward, Linda, Sammy and the Narrator, exploring character development, relationships, contrasts and Russell’s wider ideas.
Week 5
Develop quotation selection, evidence embedding, language, form and structure analysis, key-word analysis and effective PEEL paragraphs.
Week 6
Develop PETAL paragraphs, layered interpretations and AO1, AO2 and AO3 skills before applying them to a full GCSE exam-style response.

GCSE Blood Brothers Masterclass – 6-Week Online Course

Develop your understanding of Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers and strengthen the skills needed for GCSE English Literature exams. This 6-week GCSE Blood Brothers Masterclass combines detailed study of themes, context and characters with focused exam preparation.

Week 1 – Themes & Context

Explore Britain in the late twentieth century, including the importance of Liverpool and Skelmersdale to the play. Students will examine how Russell presents money, social class and unequal opportunities, particularly through the contrasting experiences of Mickey and Edward.

Week 2 – Themes & Context Continued

Develop a deeper understanding of the play’s major themes, including fate and superstition, childhood and growing up, friendship, identity and gender. Students will make connections between these ideas, the characters and Russell’s wider message.

Week 3 – Character Analysis

Analyse Mrs Johnstone and Mr and Mrs Lyons, considering how Russell uses the contrasting families to explore parenthood, class, opportunity and family relationships. Students will practise selecting evidence and developing analytical interpretations.

Week 4 – Character Analysis Continued

Explore Mickey, Edward, Linda, Sammy and the Narrator in greater depth. Students will examine character development, relationships and contrasts while considering how each character contributes to the play’s central ideas.

Week 5 – Exam Skills

Develop essential GCSE examination skills, including selecting and embedding quotations, analysing language, form and structure, and zooming in on key words. Students will practise constructing clear and effective PEEL analytical paragraphs.

Week 6 – Advanced Exam Skills

Bring everything together through PETAL paragraphs, layered interpretations and AO1, AO2 and AO3 skills. Students will evaluate model responses, identify how analysis can be improved and apply their learning to a full GCSE exam-style response.

The course supports students studying Blood Brothers across the relevant GCSE English Literature specifications, with an emphasis on confident, evidence-based analysis and effective exam writing.
