Synopsis
This structured 6-week GCSE A Christmas Carol Masterclass helps students strengthen their understanding of key themes, context and characters, analyse quotations with greater depth, and develop confident, exam-ready PEEL / PETAL analytical paragraphs. Lessons are designed to build exam confidence through small-group teaching, guided modelling, targeted feedback and focused weekly tasks. This course is ideal for students working towards a secure Grade 5–7 — and for those aiming to push into Grade 8–9.
Course fee: £15 per session × 6 weeks = £90 in total.
Course Details
Week 1
Explore key themes including poverty, social responsibility, family and Christmas, alongside the social and historical context of Victorian Britain. Students will examine how Dickens uses these themes to communicate his social and moral messages.
Week 2
Explore redemption, generosity, Christmas, family and charity. Students will analyse Scrooge’s transformation and consider how Dickens uses contrasting ideas such as poverty and wealth, selfishness and generosity, and responsibility and redemption.
Week 3
Study Scrooge, Jacob Marley, Fred and the Ghost of Christmas Past, exploring their roles and key quotations. Students will examine Scrooge’s development and how these characters reveal ideas about isolation, responsibility, memory and change.
Week 4
Explore the Ghost of Christmas Present, Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, the Cratchit family and supporting characters, including Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, Fezziwig and Belle. Students will explore generosity, poverty and social responsibility.
Week 5
Develop exam-writing skills through quotation selection, quotation embedding and structured analytical paragraphs. Students will practise making clear points, selecting precise evidence and analysing Dickens’ language and methods using AO1 and AO2.
Week 6
Develop sophisticated analytical writing by exploring writer’s methods, key words and alternative interpretations. Students will practise exam-style responses combining AO1, AO2 and contextual knowledge.
