Synopsis

In these sessions, the course will explore how Stevenson uses the context of the streets of London to show what life was like in Victorian times. Furthermore, how science and religion often clashed with each other. In addition, while looking at the novella, the course will demonstrate how the character of Dr Jekyll became affected by his use of science. In each lesson there will be questions and quizzes to help the student retain the knowledge of the course.

Course Details

Week 1
In this week, we will look at life in the Victorian times and how reputation meant everything to the Victorian.
Week 2
During this week, the student will look at how secrecy affected Dr Jekyll and those around him. Also, it will look at good and evil before and after the potion is taken.
Week 3
Expanding on from last week, we will explore science and religion. Furthermore, the lesson will look at how Stevenson would use these topics to show why they would often clash and how this affected Dr Jekyll.
Week 4
In the final week, we will explore the narrative and look at how the novella is ‘gothic.’

Each course will have no more than 8 students. Each small group course is designed for a particular level and subject. This is ideal for students who would rather learn with others. Each session is £12 per session.
